My 202 movies in 2020 ranked, from Best to Worst

If anything is guaranteed to shine a spotlight on the fruitlessness of human endeavour, it’s a global pandemic, a rampant killer virus that you can catch by breathing in the wrong direction. If you want to get existential about it, such a gargantuan tidal wave for humanity can make you wonder what on Earth you’re doing with your life. If you want to get biblical, you can point to the God of the Old Testament, and argue fastidiously (though, you suspect, fruitlessly) that this kind of thing totally plays to his M.O, it has his fingerprints all over it. You could get philosophical and talk about us being reminded of our place, as nothing more than dust in the wind (dudes). You could pull out some science. You could go temporarily insane and look for conspiracy theories. You could even, if you really wanted to, delve into the history books – you could see how people have behaved accordingly in similar plagues and pandemics for centuries, how the middle classes have always swamped the countryside, or fled to the sea, how governments have always let viruses dictate the course of action rather than making the big decisions themselves. Always the same. Always, always the same. It’s almost like people behave as people will behave no matter what we see or hear, no matter what history tells us, on and on ad infinitum.

Could it be that… oh God… we never really learn?

Earlier this year I decided, for reasons of massive work-loss, to watch 202 films (to numerically echo the year 2020). At first just ones I vaguely fancied watching (Moneyball) and some I hadn’t seen for a while (Rocky IV, Police Academy 2), but pretty quickly it became a far worthier undertaking, a makeshift film school with a homemade syllabus featuring names from around the world. Some from nearly 100 years ago, many from before the war, some from just fractionally pre-Covid. And what watching all of these films taught me – above anything else – is that people don’t change. Human beings constantly struggle to evolve on a societal level, but by and large society doesn’t really shift. Joan of Arc’s plight wasn’t so different from Coffy’s in the movie Coffy. We don’t really learn anything new, hierarchical structures remain mostly intact, just the odd dent, but the same wrestles now are the same wrestles from before. The same questions, ultimately, keep being asked and not properly answered. We want to know that we’re important and that we have meaning. That we matter. And Jesus Christ, if this year has taught us anything, it’s that knowing your life matters is the basis of fucking EVERYTHING.

Anyway I’ll shut up now – below is the full list of movies watched, from Best to Worst, from Must Sees to Don’t Bothers, all scored on my handy Covid Rating – 19 being the bomb, 1 being atrocious. It’s been a year when I discovered great thinkers like Ingmar Bergman, Eric Rohmer (my most-watched director, with 10 movies on the list), Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Ozu, Kurosawa. Billie Wilder. Fellini, Truffaut. Godard. Melville. Nicolas Roeg. Cassavetes (who I don’t think I like, I can’t decide)… it might actually be – besides marriage, children, amassing small useless piles of pocket change etc – the most fruitful endeavour of my life.

Here’s the countdown…
