They probably didn’t have iPods… but you do!

The more astute readers will have noticed the warm beams caressing their cheeks during their morning stroll to work – that’s because after years of spraying cans of Right Guard directly at the moon, we appear to have finally got the early sunshine that we’ve all been craving for so long. How long it will last, absolutely no one knows. Not even Michael Fish. All we do know is that from now until who-knows-when, every spare blade of grass will be squodged beneath the body of a handsome young man/woman, probably wearing a short sleeved shirt/vest, delicately folding perfect strips of cured ham into his/her thirsty mouth. To find out exactly what will be required at one of these increasingly popular “picnics” – so derived from two French words: “piquer”, meaning “to pick”, and “nique”, meaning “a morsel” – why not have a flick through some handy recipes here.

And for those wondering what songs might suit such an occasion, below are ten must-download-nows, which would be well worth a spot on your “picnic playlist”….

Summer Soft, Stevie Wonder

Summertime, Janis Joplin

Grazing in the Grass, Hugh Masekela

Long Hot Summer, The Style Council

Summer in the City, Lovin’ Spoonful

Water, Rose Royce
