Now known as Mrs Kevin Kline
It’s easy to forget that there was a time when sexy swimming wasn’t a stock inclusion in films. In fact, early Hollywood movies rarely even bothered with water scenes at all, they didn’t see the point. More fool them. Because, in 1982, Phoebe Cates took to the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and everything just clicked into place. It was a bold, brilliant move. So brilliant that these days, it’s unlikely that you’ll sit through an entire film without at least one slow motion scene of a slippery body twisting around like a sensual eel, as a misty trouser tightening silence descends all around the cinema. What a magnificent gal she was, with a body as sweet as cherry, cherry wine, and a slightly scew-whiff mouth. She was also in Gremlins and the excellent Bright Lights, Big City with Michael J Fox. She has since retired from acting, and twice turned down Oscar winning Jodie Foster roles – first in The Accused and then in Silence of The Lambs.
Of course, there will be no Phoebe Cates for the guys without a little Tom Selleck for the girls. Below is Tom Selleck.
