Forgotten beauties: Tennis Girl

Published: 23rd Jan, 2009

Who knew a bum could make millions?

It’s always the simplest, most obvious ideas that make the big bucks. Before 1977, no one had thought to take camera along to a routine game of commando tennis, because why would they? It’s about winning, not sitting around taking silly pictures.  Then Martin Elliott, a photographer, demanded that his girlfriend, Fiona Butler, remove her underpants and fetch some stray balls, and a legend was born. The picture went on to become one of the most popular Athena posters ever, alongside that one of the male stripper kidnapping a baby, and the people street kissing. It sold something amazing like two million copies, and to this day, pretty Fiona is only recognised when she turns around and scratches her bottom. Even so, she’s not embarrassed. No sir. What a gal.

Of course, we can’t show the guys a great piece of “ass” without treating the women to the same. Below is Tom Selleck.
